Georg Philipp Telemann wrote twelve Fantasias for viola da gamba. They were published in Germany in 1735 but the manuscript was considered lost until a print was discovered in a private collection in 2015. The viola da gamba is a bowed, fretted, six stringed instrument. The guitar and viola da gamba share an ancestor in the 15th and 16th century Spanish vihuela. The physical similarities and the shared ancestry make the Fantasias attractive candidates for guitar transcription.
